About Tidepools
Tidepools is a student-run magazine featuring art, photography, poetry, short stories, and music created by the people of the North Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. Tidepools has been published annually since 1964 by Peninsula College with support from the Associated Student Council, Peninsula Daily News, and The Buccaneer.

Who Can Enter?
- Residents living in Clallam and Jefferson counties in Washington State are eligible to enter.
- There is no limit on the number of entries, but please note we typically publish no more than three works from each contributor, and each submission requires a separate entry fee and entry form.
- Previous winners are welcome to enter.
What Can be Entered?
- We accept most forms of visual art (fine, digital, 2D, 3D, color, B&W). AI-generated art will not being considered.
- We accept most forms of photography (color, B&W, digital, film)
- We accept all forms of poetry.
- We accept short stories, 3000 words or less.
What Are the Entry Fees?
Entry fees go toward cash prizes.
- Youth $5.00 per entry
- PC Student entries are free
- Adult $7.50 per entry
- Non-contest entries are free and considered for publication but not eligible for cash prizes.
What Prizes Can be Won?
Thank you for supporting local artists.
- 1st place in each PC & adult category wins $100.
- 1st place in each youth category wins $25.
- All contest winners are guaranteed publication and a free copy of the magazine.
When is the Submission Deadline?
- Submissions should be submitted online or postmarked 11:59 PM (PST) Friday, January 17, 2025.
How Are Entries Judged?
- Submissions are judged blind by respected community members.
What Are the General Guidelines?
- Your name should not appear on or in the work.
- Online entries are preferred, but mailed entries will still be accepted.
- Contest entries should be accompanied by a check for the total of all entry fees made payable to Peninsula College. Do not mail cash.
- By submitting their work, entrants agree that Peninsula College may use the work for records, educational, catalog, and publicity purposes.
- Peninsula College is not responsible for lost or damaged work.
Online Submissions
- Online submissions are Tidepools preferred submission method.
- Entrants are responsible for making sure submission files meet the requiements outlined below.
- Submissions that do not meet the requirements listed below may not be considered.
Art
- We accept most forms of visual art (fine, digital, 2D, 3D, color, B&W).
- AI-generated art will not being considered.
- Your name should not appear on or in the artwork.
- Image files should be in jpg. format.
- Digital images should be 1MB or larger.
- Digital images should have a resolution of at least 300dpi.
Photography
- We accept all forms of photography and digital photography (color, B&W).
- Your name should not appear on or in the work.
- Image files should be in jpg. format.
- Digital images should be 1MB or larger.
- Digital images should have a resolution of at least 300dpi.
Submit a high-quality image of all artwork and photography.
Entrants can watch the video “How to Photograph Your Art” on Saatchi Online for tips to ensure high-quality images.
Poetry
- We accept all forms of poetry.
- Your name should not appear on or in the work.
- Entries must be typed and double-spaced
- Insert page numbers and the title of the work in the document header so it appears on all pages of typed entries.
- Save files in .doc, .docx, or .rtf format.
Prose
- We accept short stories of 3000 words or less.
- Your name should not appear on or in the work.
- Entries must be typed and double-spaced.
- Insert page numbers and the title of the work in the document header so it appears on all pages of typed entries.
- Save files in .doc, .docx, or .rtf format.
Music
- We accept all genres of music.
- Music must be original (sorry, no covers).
- Files must be in MP3 format.

Mailed Submissions
- Mailed entries should be accompanied by an entry form.
- Your name should not appear on or in the work.
- Poetry and prose submissions must be typed and double-spaced.
- The title of the work and page numbers should appear on all pages of typed entries.
- All work selected for publication must be available in an editable digital format upon request.
- A separate entry form is required for each submission.
- Contest entries should be accompanied by a check for the total of all entry fees made payable to Peninsula College. Do not mail cash.
- Mailed entries will be manually entered in Submittable.
